Who We Are

Our Mission

MILA is a community of Muslims which fundamentally attempts to strive in the way of Allah (God) by exemplifying the potential of Islam as a tool of achieving our individual and social potential. We are dedicated to collective action in the way of building, serving, and strengthening our communities through education and activism. We aim to influence ourselves, and those around us, by fostering a community in which the beauty of Islam is brought into fruition through our efforts and the Merciful Guidance of Allah (God).

The MILA community may be best understood through the terms of our names:

M USLIM    signifies our identity and members' commitment to Islam. Islam is that code of morals and behavior that shapes our individual consciousness and collective efforts.

I NTENT   recognizes the orientation of this group in its commitment. Every member understands the necessary input required to achieve the goals of the organization.

L EARNING   is the mechanism through which our efforts and goals will be enacted. We understand that the first revelation that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, received was the command IQRA, or read. Therefore, we place an emphasis on the role of attaining knowledge as a backbone to this organization.

A CTIVISM   is the process through which our efforts will come into being. It signifies the need for the Muslim community to enact its potential through an array of physical efforts. The brevity of this statement should not be taken as a de-emphasis of activism but rather as an indication that the need for it must be self-evident to a member of this group.

A Brief History

MILA was started in 2002 as an organization of Muslim leaders and youth in the Rocky Mountain region, dedicated to community service in the celebration of the true spirit of Islam.

"MILA" stands for Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism, and thus the two core goals of our organization are Learning and Activism. We want to encourage our community, both Muslim and non-Muslim, to learn about Islam and Islamic principles of compassion, strength, sisterhood and brotherhood as well as to empower Muslims to actively contribute and strengthen their communities on the basis of their Islamic values and principles.
